Project Proposal: Encoding as Close Reading

Please see the following link for my project proposal: https://github.com/tlewek/dh-praxis-16/blob/master/dh-praxis-proposal.md. Jojo has already, and graciously, provided some feedback (specifically, recommending that I include case uses), which I plan to incorporate during the revision process.

Zine Union Catalog: proposal by Jenna Freedman

Overview[1] For several years, zine librarians across North America have been collaborating to build a union catalog for zines. A “union catalog” is a resource where libraries can share cataloging and holdings information, the prime example being WorldCat, which has thousands of member libraries. A union catalog allows librarians to copy catalog records and facilitates […]

Digital Humanities–a Definition At Last! | Lower East Side Librarian

Howdy–I realized I never made a final project post, so here it is! In completing my final project for my digital praxis class I finally came up with my personal definition of digital humanities. I included it in my paper as this “reflective sidebar.” Read more at: Digital Humanities–a Definition At Last! | Lower East Side […]

Final Project – Classroom Library

For my final project, I decided on creating a project proposal. As some of you may remember, I gave a short presentation in the last class about it. It was an application for a classroom library. I also did a short demonstration of the first iteration I made a few months ago. That version is […]

Revisiting the dataset – Roosevelt Store Ledger

As I continue to work with the Roosevelt store ledger, that I wrote about here, it seems that this object provides a number of avenues for research. The people listed in it, the famous and the unknown, nearly 1,000 in number, could each be investigated. Even a brief look into details of their lives, brings […]

Final Project – Leisler Papers grant proposal

For my final project, I have attempted to write a grant proposal, for a NEH Scholarly Editions and Translations grant, for the Jacob Leisler Papers Project. Briefly: “If approved, funding for the Jacob Leisler Papers Project, would allow for the digital publication, in the form of a website, of the collected translated and transcribed documents […]

Final Project – Edit Swap

When I was initially thinking about my final project, I wanted to do something outside of the traditional paper or data project format. I wasn’t completely satisfied with my Finnegans Wake data experimentation project, but I can always go back to that another time. I was very curious about the grant write-up option because it may […]

Google Scholar Workshop

A little over a month ago I attended a Google Scholar workshop on what it is and how to create your profile. It was an eye-opening experience, mostly because it made me aware that I have absolutely nothing available to go on my profile! I’m still pretty young and new in the academia scene, so […]

Editor at Large

From November 14 to 20, I acted as an editor-at-large for DHNow. It was a strange week and I was probably not up for the task as much as I would like. But I did enjoy the experience, and tried to do a good job. I found that checking in several times a day, for […]

  • Welcome to Digital Praxis 2016-2017

Encouraging students think about the impact advancements in digital technology have on the future of scholarship from the moment they enter the Graduate Center, the Digital Praxis Seminar is a year-long sequence of two three-credit courses that familiarize students with a variety of digital tools and methods through lectures offered by high-profile scholars and technologists, hands-on workshops, and collaborative projects. Students enrolled in the two-course sequence will complete their first year at the GC having been introduced to a broad range of ways to critically evaluate and incorporate digital technologies in their academic research and teaching. In addition, they will have explored a particular area of digital scholarship and/or pedagogy of interest to them, produced a digital project in collaboration with fellow students, and established a digital portfolio that can be used to display their work. The two connected three-credit courses will be offered during the Fall and Spring semesters as MALS classes for master’s students and Interdisciplinary Studies courses for doctoral students.

The syllabus for the course can be found at cuny.is/dps17.
